“Welcome to the place where there is fun after fifty (and before) for women of all walks of life,” says the Red Hat Society website. “We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life and, since we are all in it together, we might as well join red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together.” While their apparel fashion often turns heads, there is more to these women than meets the eye, however. The website adds: “Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.”

The Red Hat Society was founded in 1998 for women who were nearing 50 years of age and older. Founder Sue Ellen Cooper of Fullerton, California gave out the first of her signature red hats (a fedora) to a friend for her birthday, along with a poem by Jenny Joseph that read: “When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me.” Over the years, several more friends received red hats and purple outfits and they began to hold tea parties. While she never initially intended her womens apparel idea to become a global phenomenon, Cooper was happy to start a society that promoted “fun, friendship, freedom and fulfillment.” As of July 2009, there are over 40,000 registered members and nearly 24,000 chapters that span 26 countries.

One might wonder, “What exactly do these Red Hat ladies do?” Each year, these women pay $20 in annual dues for access to the network and RHS-only discounts. Some participants just remain independent members at the online “Hatquarters,” where they can write to other members in forums, play online games, gain discounts and meet occasionally at local chapter events. “Red Hatters” and “Pink Hatters” are the designations for women who meet regularly (at least once or twice a month) at their local chapter or two. As a member of the chapter, women don party hats and go out in droves to share meals, play games, attend theater performances, travel, attend conventions and engage in many more fun activities. Some members may even go on to become “Queens,” which are the organizers for a local chapter.

One popular place to purchase apparel clothing suitable for the Red Hat Society is www.marylusuniquegiftsonline.com. There are many different styles to choose from — and all at reasonable prices too! For instance, a J-Lo inspired canvas crimson hat with a five-inch brim and purple cloth underneath sells for $23. Red cowboy hats with purple feathers and dazzling sparkles can be purchased for $38. Straw hats can be both classy and beautiful for just under $45. There are a number of hats visors for sale ranging from $6 to $12 and adorned in all sorts of accessorizing beads, sparkles, sequins and feathers. A flashy yet sophisticated red fedora sells for $20, while a youthful newsboy cap sells for $17. As one can see, there are all different hat styles for all different personalities.
